PARRISH, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 21 UCF women's golf team came up just short Tuesday at the Central District Invitational, which was played at the Lakewood Ranch Golf Club. The Knights finished second in the event, only one stroke off the pace of No. 14 Vanderbilt.
The Knights bested No. 20 Michigan State by three shots to take runner-up honors, thanks to solid final round scores from Ashley Holder, Kaitlyn Price and Kristine Odaiyar, who played her best golf of the season.
Odaiyar, a freshman playing in just her third event of the year, posted career-low numbers after turning in a 68 (-4) in the opening round and finishing with a 208 (-8) for the tournament. Odaiyar finished tied for third place with teammate Fanny Cnops in the individual scoring.
Cnops led all players after posting impressive first- and second-round scores of 68 (-4) and 66 (-6). But she struggled in the final round and was unable to hold on for her second-straight individual win.
"We were excited to have the opporunity to go up against Vanderbilt and hang with them. It shows the team that they can compete at the highest level," UCF head coach Emily Marron said. "I'm really proud of their performance, anytime you shoot -19 as a team you have to be happy."
The Knights are scheduled to be back in action at the LSU Golf Classic on Mar. 21 in Baton Rouge, La.
