ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women’s golf program added a key component for the 2014-15 season Tuesday. Colombia native Laura Sojo, who currently attends the Core Golf Academy in Orlando, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Knights next season.
“We are very excited to have Laura join our program,” UCF head coach Emily Marron said. “In golf, one player can elevate a program and I strongly believe Laura can do that for us. She will be joining a very strong team next year. With most of our lineup coming back, Laura will provide even more depth to our team and that’s what it takes to stay nationally competitive.”
Sojo is ranked as the No. 19 golfer in the 2014 recruiting class by Golfweek. She is currently the No. 67-ranked junior player in the world, according to Golfweek. Sojo was a 2012 Rolex Junior All-America Honorable Mention performer.
Sojo recently took first place in the 2013 Optimist International Tournament of Champions, a junior event held at Champions Gate Golf Club. Sojo carded rounds of 73 and 69 to finish 2-under and take the tournament title. In 2012, Sojo took the South American Junior Championship in Bolivia. She took runner-up honors at the AJGA Thunderbird International Junior tournament last year, as well.
“Laura comes in with a great resume and experience from around the world in junior golf,” Marron said. “I have no doubt, she will be ready to jump into our lineup and contribute right away.”
The 2013-14 season resumes for UCF in January. After competing in four fall tournaments, the Knights will open the spring portion of their schedule on Jan. 27 at the Florida One-Day Shootout.
