ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - A huge crowd was on hand for the UCF rowing team's first home regatta of the season, and the Knights were able to capture three victories out of four races against Miami Saturday on Lake Pickett. UCF took first in the novice 8+, second varsity 8+ and the varsity 8+ on a perfect day in Orlando.

"Our team was really fired up and focused for our first home race," said interim head coach Becky Frost. "We were extremely excited and everyone across the board performed very well. This team has been learning from every race, and even though it's early, we are building on each experience.

"We are definitely going to step up our training and our intensity in the coming days so we can prepare for our second home regatta against Princeton April 12 as well as the Virginia Invitational that weekend."

With flat conditions on the lake and a negligible cross tailwind, the Knights sent three novice boats into the water to get the action vs. Miami underway at 8 a.m. UCF's top boat cruised to the win with a time of 6:48.61, followed by the "B" and "C" squads which took second and third, respectively. Miami finished fourth with a time of 7:37.42.

UM did bounce back to earn the victory in the varsity 4+, defeating the Knights' "A" boat by just under six seconds. But the second varsity 8+ put UCF back in the win column, posting a time of 6:40.35, with the lightweight boat claiming second place thanks to a time of 6:53.84. The Hurricanes were right behind in third by completing the course in 6:58.28.

In the final event of the morning, UCF's varsity 8+ used a strong performance to defeat UM, notching first with a time of 6:34.79. The Hurricanes were almost 10 seconds behind when they crossed the finish line in 6:44.64.

The Knights return to competition when they host Princeton on Lake Pickett during UCF Athletics Hall of Fame Weekend April 12. UCF also will be in action at the Virginia Invitational April 12-13.
