ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Following a competitive fall season in which the team secured top-10 victories at both the Hatter Classic and the Head of the Hooch, head coach Becky Cramer and the UCF women's rowing team released their 2010 schedule on Monday. The slate is highlighted by a home regatta against Alabama the first week of May.
"It is a very different schedule then we have ever had," Cramer said. "We are traveling to new places we have never been. There are teams we've never seen and different courses we've never raced on, with different weather conditions. We have to be prepared for the unexpected."
The Knights will once again start their season with the Metro Cup on Saturday, March 6 hosted by Rollins College in Winter Park. UCF has competed in the Metro Cup for the past 13 years and has totaled 37 victories, including 12-straight in the varsity 8+ event.
The Knights will then compete in the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, March 19-21 against host Texas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and No. 17 Iowa and No. 18 Louisville. UCF is no stranger to this event, having secured 11 victories in 2009, including a sweep against Kansas State.
In early April, the Knights will head to the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind., to row against Indiana, Boston University and Miami.
Following the Dale England Cup, the Knights will travel to Washington D.C., to participate in the George Washington Invitational April 9-10. At the event, the Black and Gold will face off with Columbia, Georgetown, Navy and host George Washington.
UCF returns home on May 1 to host Alabama, which will prepare the Knights for the South/Central Regional Championships May 15-16 and possibly the NCAA Championships May 28-30 in Gold River, Calif.
In the 2009 South/Central Regional Championships, UCF finished 10th overall and earned third-place South Region honors.
"We have done a lot more in small boats," Cramer says about the Knights' preparation for the tough schedule. "We have also done a lot more meters and a lot more distance in small boats to piggy-back on the accountability. I feel that will pay off and build a good foundation for the upcoming events."
