ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF novice rowing team opened its 2010 season with the Metro Cup Saturday in Winter Park. The Knights raced against seasoned varsity boats in the regatta and claimed third-place honors in the varsity 8+ event.
The regatta began with a cold start at 8:30 a.m., with the novice 4 `A" race. The Knights came in second with a time of 8:05.5, ten seconds behind winner Villanova's 7:55.4.
The novice `B' race followed with UCF's club team also participating. The Knights' time of 8:07.7 was good for a second- second place finish, while the Knights' club team took first place honors.
The temperature warmed up and remained favorable throughout the day to help the Black and Gold fight hard with great starts and come-from-behind moves to place third in the second varsity four, varsity four, second varsity eight and varsity eight events.
The regatta was the first sprint rowing race for 21 out of the 24 rowers.
"As first time racers, we made a lot of mistakes. But they were good mistakes from being aggressive," first year novice coach Joel Furtek said. "I'm proud of the competitiveness and maturity with which they all raced."
UCF's next stop is the Longhorn Invitational March 19-21 in Austin, Texas.
