HONOLULU, Hawaii (UCFKnights.com) - It took all of five minutes for the No. 21 UCF women's soccer team to net its game winner in Friday's season opener against Washington at the No Ka Oi Tournament.
The Knights secured a 3-0 shutout over the Huskies in the first meeting in program history thanks in part to two goals by junior forward Tatiana Coleman.
Coleman put UCF on the board early in the game when she rebounded her own attempt in the center of the net to put it past Washington keeper Megan Kufeld.
The Knights didn't wait long to strike again. Lena Petermann drew a foul just outside the box to set up a free kick for Jennifer Martin. Martin buried the ball over the outstretched keeper to give the Knights a 2-0 lead, scoring her 10th career goal, just before the 18th minute.
UCF keeper Lianne Maldonado snatched Washington's Lindsay Elston's free kick just before the break to send the Knights into halftime maintaining their shutout.
In the second half, UCF continued to make Kufeld work in the net. After tossing it around in the box, UCF set up Coleman for another near-goal, but the keeper batted it away.
She managed to get one in, however, minutes later after Katy Ling's attempt was blocked by a defender. Coleman connected in the back left corner for the 3-0 advantage.
Maldonado came up with another nice grab in the 71st minute as Becca Schoales struck from the right side to the far post, allowing the Knights to cruise to their first shutout of the season. Last year, UCF set a school record for most shutouts in a season, blanking 15 opponents through 17 victories.
The Knights take on host Hawaii on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
