ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF women's soccer standout Marissa Diggs was selected in the second round of the NWSL Draft by the Houston Dash on Friday morning in front of a standing-room only crowd at the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Portland Thorns traded the 11th pick of the draft to the Dash, allowing the expansion team to snag the two-time All-American.
"I am so happy to be a part of the Houston Dash. My parents are my biggest supporters, so I'm excited to be playing in my home state again and get to share this experience with them," Diggs said. "I'd like to thank my coaches and teammates for an incredible ride at UCF. I'm looking forward to proudly representing the Knights at the next level."
Besides Hall of Famer Michelle Akers, Diggs is UCF's only other two-time All-American. Diggs finished her career as a two-time conference defensive player of the year, a three-time all-region first-team selection and a three-time all-conference honoree.
During her four-year career as a starter, she helped lead the backline to become one of the top defensive units in the country. In 2013, the Knights gave up just six goals through its first undefeated conference season since 1999 and went on to win the American Athletic Conference's first tournament title.
Diggs became UCF's second Knight in as many years to hear her named called on draft day. In the league's inaugural draft last year, Nicolette Radovcic was selected in the second round as the 16th overall pick by Portland.
The Dash joined the league this year as its ninth club and first expansion team. It will be coached by two-time NCAA champion Randy Waldrum.
