ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF junior Carleigh Williams and freshman Lena Petermann became repeat honorees of the American Athletic Conference's weekly awards handed out Monday. Williams was named Defender of the Week and Petermann was chosen as Rookie of the Week for the second time in 2013 just in time for the beginning of the conference schedule.
Williams reclaims her title, which she earned in the first week on Aug. 26, after helping UCF steal a result at No. 10 Georgetown before securing its sixth shutout of the season against FGCU over the weekend. The Beverly Hills, Fla., native played all 110 minutes in UCF's 1-1 double-overtime tie Thursday to break the Hoyas' home-win streak (16) and become the first opponent to earn a decision at Shaw Field since October 2011.
Petermann had a productive week for the Knights to regain her title for the first time since Sept. 9. At Georgetown, Petermann drew a foul in the box to set UCF up with its game-tying penalty kick. She then notched two goals in a 77-second span against FGCU on Sunday to deliver a 4-0 win in the non-conference finale.
Goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado also received a shoutout from the American on its honor roll lineup this week.
The Knights (7-2-0) now boast a league-best six player of the week awards this year as the pair have been recognized along with teammates Tatiana Coleman (offensive, Sept. 9) and Marissa Diggs (Sept. 16).
The Knights continue their homestand Friday when they kick off their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference against rival USF at 6 p.m. The first 1,000 UCF students to attend the match will receive early entry passes for the sold-out UCF football game against South Carolina the following day.
