ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's soccer team swept the weekly Conference USA awards Monday for the second time this season. Thanks to their incredible performances over Senior Weekend, senior forward Tishia Jewell was recognized as the Offensive Player of the Week and junior defender Ashley Nicol was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
The pair was also lauded by TopDrawerSoccer.com as members of its Team of the Week. Jewell was selected as the national Women's College Soccer Player of the Week, as well. In addition, Jewell was chosen as the College Sports Madness Women's Soccer C-USA Player of the Week.
Jewell, of Satellite Beach, tallied two goals and four assists this weekend for a team-high eight points. She netted the first goal in UCF's 7-0 win against East Carolina for her third game-winner of the year and the first goal that the Pirates had allowed in 515 minutes of play. It opened the flood gates as UCF scored four goals in the first 11 minutes, with Jewell assisting on the third goal.
There was more to come in the second half of play when Jewell scored in the 85th minute for her second multi-goal game of the year. She closed out the game by assisting on the seventh goal with seven seconds on the clock.
On Sunday, she tied Amy Jones' program's career shots record as her three attempts against Marshall increased her total to 229. Jewell also assisted on two goals in the 5-0 win against Marshall to bring her career total to 34, which ranks second all-time at UCF and is one shy of matching the current record holder Cally Howell.
This is Jewell's second C-USA Player of the Week honor of the season and fourth of her career.
If the offense's output of 12 goals in the weekend wasn't impressive enough, the defense shined thanks in part to Nicol, who helped lead the team to back-to-back shutouts. Nicol, of Jacksonville, anchored a back line that limited its opponents to six shots and two corners combined.
Nicol headed in the second goal against Marshall for her fourth score of the season. She also assisted on the fourth goal of the game. On Friday, she assisted on two of the goals that were part of the sixth-fastest scoring sequence (1:37) of three-consecutive goals in NCAA history. This is her first career Defensive Player of the Week honor.
No other team in the league has swept the weekly awards this season. UCF has claimed a league-high six honors this year as forward Jennifer Martin (Aug. 20), midfielder Madison Barney (Sept. 3) and defender Marissa Diggs (Oct. 1) were also chosen as players of the week.
The Knights close out the regular season on the road Friday at 5 p.m. at Southern Miss.
