Miami, Fla. -
The nightcap of the Golden Panther Adidas Invitational at University Park was a pitcher's dual to say the least. No. 20 FIU escaped with a 3-2 win in eight innings.
"This is one of those games where at the end you're proud of the performance, but disappointed in the end result," head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said. "This is one of the better games we played this season. FIU is a quality team, and at the level of competition we feel we can play with on a daily basis."
Thru the first seven innings, the two hurlers combined for 19 strikeouts only giving up four hits between them.
The eighth inning brought the international tiebreaker rule. Tracey Deleon pinch ran at second base, and FIU opened the inning with a bunt single down the first base line by Lindsay Tippings. After Tippings stole second, Tabitha Embry hit a double down the leftfield line giving the Golden Panthers a 2-0 lead.
A sacrifice bunt by Dee Joy moved Embry to third base, and Deomni Murray chopped an infield hit scoring Embry making it 3-0.
UCF charged back in the bottom half of the inning as Stephanie Best blasted a two-run shot into the South Florida evening cutting the deficit to 3-2, but the rally fell short.
"That whole inning was set up for that moment," Luers-Gillispie said. "You wish you had one more runner on-base because we end up tying the game, but that ball was smashed even by Stephanie's standards."
"She kind of made me look foolish up there the first couple of times," Best said. "But I was able to make some adjustments in my approach, and was able to get a good rip."
The Golden Knights will conclude pool play against Connecticut on Saturday morning at the Golden Panther Adidas Invitational. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. against the Huskies.
