ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) –It’s a big weekend for the UCF softball team, as head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie's squad takes on a challenging field at the NFCA Lead-Off Classic in Clearwater, Fla. This is the third of four consecutive weekends of tournament play for the Knights.
The Black and Gold begin play with a doubleheader on Friday beginning with a 1 p.m. contest vs. Indiana, followed by a 3:30 p.m. contest with Fordham. The tournament will continue for the Knights on Saturday as they tackle a second doubleheader against DePaul at 1 p.m. followed by a showdown with Southern Illinois at 6 p.m. The event comes to a close for UCF on Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. matchup with Massachusetts. All game times are Eastern.

In its opening contest, the Knights will face an Indiana squad that went 5-0 en route to winning the Georgia Tech Classic in Atlanta, Ga last weekend. The Hoosiers outscored opponents 28-5 over the five games. The second game on Friday will pit UCF against Fordham. Senior Jamie LaBovick was named the A-10 Pitcher of the Week after earning three victories over LIU, Virginia Tech and Chattanooga at the Dot Richardson Collegiate Invitational last week.
The Saturday slate features contests against DePaul and Southern Illinois. DePaul will be looking for an immediate reversal of fortune after going 0-5 last weekend at the Hilton Houston Plaza Invite. The Blue Demons run-ruled the Knights, 11-0, in the first weekend of the season in Las Vegas. Southern Illinois had a tough outing last weekend at the Florida Gulf Coast University finishing the weekend 1-4 after facing three 2012 NCAA tournament teams including No. 1/2 NCAA Champions Alabama. SIU’s lone win came against Georgia Southern; they topped the Eagles 10-1.
The action in Clearwater ends with a Sunday matchup with Massachusetts. UMass went 0-3 to open the season at the FAU Kickoff Classic last week and will be playing the Knights for the first time in program history.
The Black and Gold have 21 home games at the UCF Softball Complex. Season tickets for the 2013 season cost only $30 and are general admission.
