ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - After a series win over Louisville last weekend, the UCF softball team hosts its final mid-week contest on Tuesday against rival Stetson at 6 p.m. at the UCF Softball Complex.
In the latest matchup in the rivalry on April 9, the Knights went to Patricia Wilson Field and defeated Stetson, 1-0, behind an 11-strikeout performance by junior Mackenzie Audas. Classmate Farrah Sullivan blasted a solo homer in the sixth inning, which proved to be the difference in the game.
The victory moved UCF (33-14, 9-3 The American) to 15-6 in the all-time series vs. Stetson (31-9, 15-5 A-Sun), including eight of the past nine meetings. The Knights are 5-3 at home, 8-2 on the road and 3-1 at neutral sites. A 4-2 mark was recorded by UCF when the squads were A-Sun foes (2002-05).
UCF has taken series at USF and against Louisville since the last matchup with the Hatters. Stetson posted a big 2-1 series win over Lipscomb (RPI 30) last week that included a 4-3 13-inn. triumph in the finale to stay in second place in the league standings, but dropped a pair of games at Kennesaw State on April 12-13.
Earlier today, the Knights saw sophomore designated player Jessica Ujvari and Audas selected to The American Honor Roll following the series win over Louisville. A grand slam was belted by Je. Ujvari, her second of the season, in the finale, while Audas went 1-1 in the circle including the Sunday victory with 11 strikeouts in 14 innings.
Both teams rely on pitching as a key to success. The Knights pace The American with a 1.42 ERA behind the dynamic duo of sophomore Shelby Turnier (16-5) and Audas (15-9). UCF is also second nationally in total strikeouts with 386.
Stetson ace Meredith Owen (16-3) leads the country with a 0.73 ERA and has fanned 128 in 143.2 frames, but was dealt the loss vs. the Knights on April 9. A 10-2 overall mark has been contributed by Sarah Read with 45 strikeouts in 80.2 innings.
Pacing the Hatters offense is Jessie Tenbroeck with a .380 avg., 49 hits and 42 runs scored. A team-leading 11 doubles and six homers have been tallied by Demi Meza, while Owen leads the squad with 39 RBI.
Junior Kahley Novak is The American leader in hits (54) and stolen bases (27), while carrying a .367 batting avg. The top three for UCF in RBI are junior Farrah Sullivan (22), Je. Ujvari (19) and Mariah Garcia (22).
On Saturday at 1 p.m., the first-place Knights and second-place Houston begin a three-game set in Orlando that will give the series winner a leg up in the regular season standings going into the final weekend. The finale of the series is set for noon on Sunday.
