ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF softball team got its preparations for the 2014 season underway as it kicked off its fall schedule with a 7-4 victory over Seminole State College at the UCF Softball Complex.

Sophomore pitcher Shelby Turnier showed she’s more than just a hurler as she hit the game-winning grand slam for the Knights in the fifth inning. Turnier, who earned 14 wins and recorded a 2.33 ERA in the circle during her rookie season, is hopeful to see more opportunities to at the plate after just 68 at bats as a freshman. The Palm Beach Gardens native also tossed two perfect innings, racking up five strikeouts along the way.

Fellow sophomore Jasmine Acevedo went 1-for-3 with a single, a stolen base and a run scored. The Largo native was hitting .333 and leading the Knights in RBI before suffering an ankle injury that wiped out most of the rest of her opening campaign.

“Jasmine was a strong hitter for us last year before her injury,” UCF head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said. “She’s worked really hard on her game this summer and I think so far she’s been one of our most improved hitters.”

Sophomore transfer Jamie Ujvari was strong in relief as she allowed just one hit in two scoreless of innings of work to go along with five strikeouts. Ujvari, a sophomore who played last season with South Carolina-Upstate, is in the mix for one of the Knights rotation spots.

The Knights have six fall ball games remaining and the remaining schedule can be found below.
