ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF softball team is off to a great start as it readies for the upcoming 2014 season. After kicking off fall ball with a 7-4 victory over Seminole State College, the Knights scored four more victories last weekend, including three shutouts.
The Knights topped Polk State Junior College, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Hillsboro State College, and Florida State College of Jacksonville to improve to 5-0 in fall play.
UCF will continue its fall schedule on Oct. 18, when the Knights face Eastern Florida State College at 10 a.m.
UCF 11, POLK STATE JUNIOR COLLEGE 0
Sophomore pitcher Shelby Turnier yielded another strong performance opening the weekend 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Palm Beach Gardens product pitched five perfect innings, picking up ten strikeouts along the way.
Four Knights recorded RBI doubles against Polk State, including third-year Kahley Novak, who went 2-for-3 and managed a stolen base. Mariah Garcia and Jasmine Acevedo, who led UCF in doubles last season, finished 1-for-4 and 2-for-3 with an RBI, respectively. Rounding out the offensive effort was second baseman Kaitlyn Steckle (2-for-2), who put up a single to go along with her RBI double.
Outfielder Maddy Schroeder opened the weekend going 2-for-4 while picking up an RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
UCF 3, PALM BEACH ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY 2
The Knights scored a second win on Saturday’s schedule with a 3-2 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic University.
Offensively, infielder Kirsten Foster nailed the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning to finalize the UCF win. The Clermont, Fla. Native went 1-for-1 with a walk-off.
Samantha McCloskey unleashed a homerun for the Knights, also going 1-for-1 with a walk, while newcomer Andrea Neswiacheny finished 2-for-3, grabbing a stolen base along the way.
Winning pitcher Jaime Ujvari tossed one inning for UCF to pick up one strikeout and no errors.
UCF 9, HILLSBORO STATE COLLEGE 0
Day two for the Knights opened with a third consecutive win, as UCF shutout Hillsboro State College, 9-0, on Sunday.
Junior outfielder Maddy Schroeder finished 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, while Knights pitcher Shelby Turnier went 1-for-1 with a triple and RBI.
Sophomore Kalyn Cenal, who closed last season with a .218 average, finished 2-for-3 versus HSC and picked up an RBI, while Kirsten Foster was 1-for-3 in the game and recorded a double.
Fellow sophomore Jaime Ujvari racked up seven strikeouts in three innings of work, while Lena Springer tossed two frames for the Knights, allowing a one hit performance in the circle and picking up two strikeouts.
Mackenzie Huhn saw two innings for the Knights and allowed four hits, but had no errors in the game.
UCF 12, FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE OF JACKSONVILLE
In its final run, the UCF softball team notched its fourth straight victory and third shutout to wrap up the four-game weekend.
Third baseman Farrah Sullivan scored two runs, while going 3-for-3 with an RBI double. Centerfielder Kalyn Cenal hit three RBI to accompany a double on a 2-for-4 effort.
Sophomore Shelby Turnier finished 2-for-4 at bat with a single RBI to complement her winning performance at the mound, where she saw three innings for the Knights to tally a seven strikeout, no-hitter.
Other notable performances included Samantha McCloskey (2-for-4/RBI), Maddy Schroeder (1-for-3/RBI), Kahley Novak (1-for-4/two RBI), and Britt Solis (2-for-5/RBI). Jaime Ujvari (no hits, four strikeouts), Lena Springer (one hit, one strikeout) and Mackenzie Huhn (no hits, one strikeout) pitched two innings apiece, while Mackenzie Audas stepped in for three innings, allowing two hits and delivering four strikeouts with no errors.
