Charging On to The American Championships

ORLANDO, Fla. ( - The UCF women's tennis team will go head to head against Temple in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championships this Thursday at 9 a.m. The inaugural tournament for the American will be held at the USF Varsity Courts in Tampa, Fla., April 17-20.

Capping off the season in dominating fashion, the Knights swept South Carolina State, 7-0, on Saturday's Senior Day with big wins coming from seniors Josephine Haraldson and Courtney Griffith. With a 16-13 overall record, sophomore Caroline Eberhart has been a consistent force at both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The Black and Gold finished off a hard-fought spring 6-12 (0-3, AAC), dropping nine matches, 4-3, in close decisions.

Temple grabbed the No. 7 seed for the Championships after closing out the season 8-10 (1-3, AAC). The Owls have won three straight behind the play of seniors Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina and have also leaned on freshmen Anais Nussaume and Dina Karina throughout the season.

Former Conference-USA rivals, No. 27 Houston and No. 38 Memphis, claimed the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds respectively, while neighboring host to the tourney, No. 40 USF, is the No. 3 seed.

Championships action is set to begin on Thursday at 9 a.m. featuring UCF/Temple and the No.8-seed Cincinnati/No. 9 UConn. Houston will then face the winner of the Cincinnati/UConn match, while Memphis will battle the winner of UCF/Temple. Tournament play will continue with No. 4 Louisville/No. 5 Rutgers and No. 6 SMU/No. 3 USF at noon. The semi-final matches will be played Saturday at noon and the championship final will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday. The American champ will then set their eyes to the NCAA Tournament with an automatic bid to the big stage.
