ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Head coach Stephanie Nickitas announced Tuesday that Sofia Baptista has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the UCF women's tennis team beginning in the fall of 2012. Baptista hails from Portugal and will be a freshman for the Knights next season.

"We are very excited to have Sofia join our team," said Nickitas. "She is a very talented left-hander with a dynamic game and will be a great asset in both singles and doubles."

Currently ranked No. 7 in her native country, Baptista also achieved a No. 4 Under-16 national ranking as well as a No. 5 Under-18 ranking. She reached the singles final of the U-18 regional championship in Lisbon, and the quarterfinals in doubles play. Her team was the regional champions last year while taking third place at nationals.

Baptista has participated in several international women's tournaments as well.

Born in Cascais, Portugal, Baptista graduated from Escola Secundária de Cascais where she was at the top of her class with a 3.8 grade-point average. She was an honors student throughout high school, and earned second place in Cascais' entrepreneurship contest.
