ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF women's tennis player Sofia Baptista received a special honor this month when she was named an honoree for the UCF Civil, Engineering and Construction Engineering (CECE) Department Sophomore Award for outstanding academic achievement.
The award is made each year to one sophomore from the CECE Department in recognition of academic success and involvement in the CECE Department. Baptista's qualifications were reviewed by members of the Corporate Affiliate Board who selected the winners at the seventh-annual CECE Builders of the Realm Celebration on Nov. 8. The event strives to recognize student leadership and excellence, faculty and alumni achievement, provides a guest speaker and a time for the CECE family to gather for food and fun.
A native of Cascais, Portugal, Baptista is in her second season with the Knights, and immediately made an impact in 2012-13. She posted a grade-point average above a 3.75 to earn the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal, and on the court she collected 17 singles wins as well as 12 doubles victories.
This fall, Baptista notched four wins on the singles court, and three more in doubles play. She will return to action with the rest of her teammates for the UCF Invitational Jan. 18-20, with dual-match action kicking off at Florida Gulf Coast Jan. 25.
