BOSTON, Mass. (UCFKnights.com) - UCF senior Destinee Romain set a new school record in the weight throw on Friday afternoon, highlighting 10 top-five finishes by the UCF track and field team at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational in Boston.
Romain and redshirt sophomore Kalen Hambrick were a one-two punch in the weight throw, both hitting personal records as they claimed the top two finishes. Romain's first place toss of 19.54m/64-01.25 blew by the previous conference leader and ranks among the nation's top 25 so far this season. It also marked the first win of her career in any throws event. Hambrick posted 18.61m/61-00.75 for second place.
In the 60M, UCF swept the top three finishes of the preliminaries with sophomore Briana Vaughn leading the way at 7.49. She claimed first in the final, as well, at 7.44, which is two-hundredths of a second shy of the top conference mark so far this year.
Christal Peterson finished runner-up in the event at 7.56 and freshman J'Nea Bellamy placed fifth at 7.63.
Bellamy claimed The American's top 200-meter time this year with her third-place finish of 24.18. Vaughn also earned a top-five finish in the event at 24.34.
Erica Winston emerged as the Knights' top finisher in the 500 meters in fourth place, crossing the line in 1:13.86.
Sandy Jean, Kirsten Nieuwendam, Erica Winston and Afia Charles combined in the 4x400 relay to deliver a fourth place performance of 3:45.32.
Freshman Paige Byrnes rounded out the top-five finishes in her first appearance for the Knights in the pole vault, clearing 3.35m/10-11.75.
UCF will enjoy a break from the track for a week before traveling to Lincoln, Neb., for the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Feb. 7-8.
