ORLANDO, Fla. - The UCF track and field team had 16 runners qualify for the finals on Saturday afternoon at The American Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Anne-Marie Blaney received a silver medal by registering a mark of 16:20.22, breaking her school record by 13 seconds.
In the long jump, senior Jen Clayton won silver for the Knights with a distance of 6.15m/20-02.25. An eighth-place finish was notched by junior Devinn Cartwright with a personal-best mark of 5.68m/18-07.75.
With 12 events remaining, the Knights are third after totaling 38 points following the second day of the meet at the USF Track & Field Stadium. SMU has increased its lead to 108 points, while Louisville is second with a tally of 49.20.
Seven personal bests were registered by the Knights during the running trials with the finals set for Sunday.
In the 100 meters, sophomore Briana Vaughn and freshman Je'Nea Bellamy each won their heat with times of 11.62 (0.5) and 11.56 (-0.7), respectively. The first at-large berth into the finals went to sophomore Christal Peterson, who finished seventh at 11.82.
The top time in the 200 meter trials was notched by freshman J'Nea Bellamy, who won her heat with a personal-best mark of 23.67 (0.5). Senior Afia Charles came in first in her heat with a personal-best time of 23.74 (0.3), while Peterson also set a career-high to earn the fifth slot at 23.05 (0.3). Vaughn is sixth entering the finals with a 23.83 (0.4).
A season-high of 53.54 was registered by Charles to win her heat in the 400 meters. The second-fastest run for Ashley Jocelyn at 55.28 positions her fourth.
Three Knights moved on to the finals in the 800 meters. Senior Erica Winston, who holds the top mark in the conference, won her heat with a mark of 2:08.64, while moving on with personal bests were sophomore Caroline Pauls and junior Amelia Williams with times of 2:11.53 and 2:11.69, respectively.
The second career-best of the day for Williams was set in the 1500 meters at 4:38.57. The Ponte Vedra Beach native will be slotted sixth in the finals.
Blaney topped the school record in the 5000 meters that she set after winning the Pepsi Florida Relays to earn eight points for the Knights. She added a first-place finish on day one in the 10,000 meters.
Junior Devinn Cartwright posted a qualifying mark of 13.96 (-1.3) to win her heat in the 100m hurdles. A season-high time of 58.77 was tallied by senior Sandy Jean in the 400m to record the top time of the day.
In the field events, freshman Siaina Campbell finished ninth in the javelin with a mark of 39.29m/128-11. Senior Destinee Romain recorded a distance of 14.05m/46-01.25 to place 10th in the shot put.
The finals on Sunday start at 10 a.m. with the triple jump for Clayton and freshman Lia King. Sophomore Allison Lampert competes in the high jump at noon. The running events kickoff at 11:10 a.m. with the 4x100m relay.
