JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior long jumper Jen Clayton was the first UCF track and field athlete to clinch a spot to Eugene, Ore., while the Knights saw four individuals post top-24 times at the NCAA East Preliminary on Thursday. Senior Afia Charles, junior Sandy Jean, sophomore Briana Vaughn and freshman J'Nea Bellamy moved onto the quarterfinals that is set for Friday evening at Hodges Stadium at North Florida.
Posting a personal-best mark of 34:17.96 in the 10,000 meters was sophomore Anne-Marie Blaney, who was one spot away from qualifying for the NCAA Championship on June 11-14 in Eugene. The Ocala native was 12th at the finish line on the scoreboard, but one runner was missed, which pushed her one-spot back.
Blaney entered with the 39th-best time and broke her own school record by 22 seconds. She still has an opportunity to move on to Eugene in the 5000 meters on Saturday.
The 2013 bronze medal winner in the long jump, Clayton, posted the 12th-best mark in the the long jump of 6.17m/20-03 (+0.1). The Nyak, N.Y., native was the last person in the event to earn a berth into the NCAA Championship.
Jean automatically qualified into the quarterfinals with a third-place finish of 58.36 in the 400m hurdles. The mark was the 14th best, but Jean, who moved onto the 2013 NCAA Championships, has shown the ability to push herself even further.
The duo of Vaughn and Bellamy advanced to the quarterfinals. Automatically qualifying at third place, 11.73 (-0.8), in her heat was Bellamy, while Vaughn just missed third in her flight by a hundredth of second at 11.73 (-0.8), but had the top at-large time.
Becoming the fourth Knight to qualify for the quarterfinals was Charles in the 400 meters. The Greenbelt, Md., native finished second in her heat at 53.51, the 12th-best time. Charles is looking for her first berth into the NCAA Championships as an individual on Friday.
Freshman Ashley Jocelyn had a fantastic rookie campaign and notched a mark of 54.46 in the 400 meters.
In the 800 meters, senior Erica Winston recorded a 2:07.30, her second-fastest time of the season, to finish among the top 35. The Long Beach, Calif., native finishes her UCF career as the school indoor record hold in the 800 meters.
The Knights' throwers, senior Destinee Romain and sophomore Kalen Hambrick, began the afternoon with the hammer throw. Hambrick recorded a toss of 53.52m/175-07, while Romain recorded a mark of 50.61m/166-00.
