ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - It's been just six days since the UCF indoor track & field team last ran, wrapping up the season at the NCAA Championship meet at Texas A&M. On Saturday, March 19, the Knights will once again return to the UCF Track and Field Complex with the beginning of the 2011 outdoor season as they host the UCF Black & Gold Challenge.
Saturday's meet will mark the first time the Knights will be back on their home track since winning the 2010 Conference USA Championship last May. Since then, UCF has gone on to claim its first C-USA Indoor Championship, while Aurieyall Scott was named Female Freshman of the Meet and Caryl Smith Gilbert was honored as the C-USA Coach of the Year.
Smith Gilbert, who was named the 2010 C-USA Outdoor Coach of the Year, was also named the 2011 USTFCCCA Indoor South Region Head Coach of the Year for leading the Knights to the league title and a No. 8 ranking in the national polls during the season.
UCF's Jackie Coward and Sonnisha Williams were named First Team All-Americans for their showings at the NCAAs last weekend. Williams earned two points and finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 20-7.0/6.27m. Coward was third in the 60-meter hurdles and earned six points as she tied her own UCF record with an 8.06 in both the finals and preliminaries of the event.
Scott was a two-time All-American at Texas A&M in her first appearance at Nationals. The Knights' freshman earned the honors in the 60 and 200 meters. On the first day of competition, Scott broke each event's school record with a 23.16 in the preliminaries of the 200, followed by a 23.32 in the finals to finish eighth. Scott then went on to run a record 7.19 in the preliminaries of the 60 meters before finishing seventh in Saturday's finals in 7.275.
Saturday's meet will feature five teams, including UCF. The Knights will be running against women's teams from Michigan, Florida, Jacksonville and Texas. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with running events set to start at 1:30 p.m.
Admission to Saturday's Black & Gold Challenge will be free to all fans. Black UKNIGHT t-shirts will also be given away during the course of the day to those in attendance.
