ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - For the second time in as many weeks, the UCF Track and Field Complex will play host to another home meet. The Knights will host the annual UCF Invitational beginning Friday at noon and continuing through Saturday evening.
The two-day meet will feature both men's and women's teams competing in a non-scoring format. Programs from Bethune-Cookman, FAU, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, Jacksonville, Miami, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic, Maryland, Cincinnati, Rhode Island, Georgia Southern and Tennessee will all be represented.
The Knights, who hosted the Black & Gold Challenge last weekend, will look for more strong showings from some of their younger performers. Sophomore Sonnisha Williams set a new school record in the 200 meters last Saturday with a 23.79 to finish fourth, while Afia Charles set a new freshmen mark in the 400 meters in 55.86. Williams' time is the 13th fastest in the nation in the 400 this season.
Sophomore Tomika Story won the triple jump with a mark of 39-5.75/12.03m, while freshman Dominique Booker also won the 100 meters in a personal-best time of 11.68. Booker's time is the 12th fastest in the nation this season in the 100 meters.
After not running last weekend, UCF's Jackie Coward and Aurieyall Scott will make their outdoor debuts following their All-American indoor seasons. Scott is scheduled to run in the 400 meters and two relays, while Coward is entered into the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay.
This past week, Coward was named the 2011 Conference USA Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, becoming the first UCF athlete in program history to earn the distinction.
The Knights claimed the top spot in the 4x400-meter relay last Saturday afternoon at the Black & Gold Challenge with a 3:46.88 finish. UCF also posted the 16th-fasted time in the country in the 4x100-meter relay with a 45.42 to finish second.
Friday's events are set to begin at noon, while Saturday is set to get underway at 9 a.m. with the women's discus.
Admission to both days is FREE and parking is available in Garage F located next to the UCF Track and Field Complex. FREE sunglasses will be given away to fans in attendance on Friday afternoon.
