ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Senior UCF middle-distance runner Karen Kozub (Alden, N.Y.) has been named the Knights' Athlete of the Week for her strong performances at the Vanderbilt Invitational this past weekend, as decided by the team's coaching staff on Monday.
Kozub ran the second-fastest 1,500-meter time in school history on Friday night in Nashville. That came a week after qualifying for regionals and coming three one-hundreths of a second shy of the school record in the 800-meter run.
Kozub finished the 1,500 meter in a personal-best time of 4:37.78, which made her just the second athlete in school history to eclipse the 4:40 plateau in the 1,500-meter run.
Following each week of competition, head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert and her staff will nominate an athlete to be the school's track and field athlete of the week based on the previous weekend's meet. That athlete will then be eligible to be considered for the Conference USA Athlete of the Week award, announced each Tuesday afternoon by the C-USA office in Irving, Texas.
