ORLANDO, Fla. - The UCF track and field team travels down I-4 to Tampa for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship that starts on Friday at the USF Track and Field Stadium. The Knights have confidence entering the meet after setting nine personal bests at the North Florida Invitational last weekend.
Following a fourth-place finish at the league's indoor championship, the Knights are looking to make a statement in their first outdoor meet in The American. UCF has taken the title in each of the past four Conference USA Outdoor Championships before switching conferences in August.
Head coach Jeanette Bolden announced a pair of freshmen in Paige Byrnes and Ashley Jocelyn as the Knights Athletes of the Week following the UNF Invite. Jocelyn ran a personal best 54.90 in the 400 meter, while Byrnes cleared a height of 3.67m/12-00.50 in the pole vault to set the school's freshman record.
UCF holds top conference marks in the 5000 meters by sophomore Anne-Marie Blaney with a time of 16:34.57 posted at the Florida Relays. Senior Erica Winston has the best 800 meters time of 2:07.91 at the Florida Relays, while classmate Jen Clayton registered a distance on 6.42m/21-00.75 in the long jump at the North Florida Invitational.
Blaney, who missed the indoor season, is the Knights record holder in the 10000 and 5000 (16:40.31) meters. Joining her in the 5000 meters is freshman Holly Wooley.
In the 100 meters, UCF has talent four deep led by sophomore Briana Vaughn, who ran a personal best time of 11.37 at the Mt. SAC Relays. Christal Peterson and J'Nea Bellamy recently set career highs at the North Florida Invite, while Kirsten Nieuwendam is on track for a breakout meet.
The Knights have five runners in the 200 meters with the addition of senior Afia Charles to the group at 100m. Vaughn has recorded the best time amongst the group at 23.58.
Winston paces the Knights at 800 meters followed by Caroline Pauls and Amelia Williams. The lone participant in the 1500 meters is Williams.
For the first time in her career, sophomore Heather Classe is set to compete in the 3000m steeple chase.
The 4x100 and 4x400 relays teams have marks just under the conference bests and are looking to make a run at the podium.
Junior Devinn Cartwright has notched the Knights top time in the 100 hurdles at 13.90 and will be joined by Lia King. The top season mark in the 400 hurdles at 59.67 is held by senior Sandy Jean, while Cartwright will run the race as well.
The field events begin on Friday afternoon with the hammer throw for senior Destinee Romain and sophomore Kalen Hambrick. Both have tallied tosses over 55 meters this season.
Freshman record holders in the pole vault, Byrnes, and javelin, Siaina Campbell, are set to compete on Saturday along with Romain in the shot put.
The jumps are scheduled for Sunday with Clayton and King in the triple jump. Cartwright and Clayton are set to participate in the long jump, while the high jump is slated for sophomore Allison Lampert.
The 10000 meters, 3000 steeple chase and hammer throw open The American Outdoor Championship on Friday.
