ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Fresh off its unprecedented fourth-straight Conference USA Outdoor Championship, the No. 9 UCF track and field team will send 10 student-athletes to the 2013 NCAA East Region Preliminary Round on May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C. This marks the fourth-straight year that the Black and Gold will be represented by 10 or more student-athletes at the meet.
UCF owns 16 entries in 10 different events that will be held at Irwin Belk Track inside of Aggie Stadium of North Carolina A&T. The Knights claim 12 marks that rank among the region's top 25. Of those 12, a region-best nine rank among the top five in their respective events.
Bowerman Watch Lister Octavious Freeman and Aurieyall Scott will headline the 100- and 200-meter races and will be joined by freshman Alexis Faulknor in the 100M. A 2013 conference medalist in both events, Freeman heads into the preliminaries as the overall favorite in the 100M and second in the 200M. Scott also ranks third in both events after emerging as league champion in the 200M for the third-straight year and runner-up in the 100M. UCF matches Ohio State for the most entries (five) by a single program in both events.
C-USA champion Afia Charles earned her spot for the third-consecutive year in the 400 meters and is currently ranked fourth heading into the meet thanks to the school and Antigua National record she clocked in her last outing.
Sophomore Sandy Jean makes her return to the preliminaries after redshirting last season and will go after All-American Jackie Coward's 400-hurdles school record once again after matching the time (57.59) in her gold-medal performance at the C-USA Championships. She ranks No. 5 in the region in the event.
Junior Ne'Ausha Logan will serve as UCF's lone competitor in the 800M for the second-straight year.
Faulknor and junior Jen Clayton will lead UCF's three entries in the long jump as the top-two leaders in the region in the event. They will be joined by All-American Sonnisha Williams. Clayton will also compete in the triple jump after qualifying in her first attempt at the event this season when she earned bronze at the C-USA Championships.
C-USA all-conference selections Kalen Hambrick and Precious Ogunleye became UCF's first qualifiers in the hammer throw since 2006. Ogunleye competed in the discus and shot put last season while Hambrick will make her first appearance at the meet.
Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from each preliminary championships competition site to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 5-8.
