ORLANDO, Fla. - The UCF Track & Field team learned on Thursday that it will have 10 representatives competing in individual events at the NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary on May 29-31 at UNF's Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville. The Knights also qualified as team for the 4x100m and 4x400m relay events.
This is the fifth-consecutive outdoor season that UCF has been represented 10 or more student-athletes at the regional meet. The Knights own eight top-30 marks in the region and stand in third in the 4x100 relay and eight in the 4x400 relay.
The duo of sophomore Briana Vaughn and freshman J'Nea Bellamy start the Knights off with the 100 and 200 meters. Vaughn ran the ninth-fastest time, 11.38 (+1.6), in the region for the 100m at Mt. SAC Relays, while the pair are separated by two tenths of a second in the 200m with Bellamy holding the 19th-best time of 12.38 at The American Championship.
In the 400 meters, senior Afia Charles leads UCF with a top 10 time of 52.77 in the region posted at The American Championship. The Greenbelt, Maryland native is a three-time NCAA preliminary qualifier and helped the 4x100 relay team finish runner-up at the 2013 NCAA Championship.
Also earning her way into the 400m event was freshman Ashley Jocelyn, who registered a mark of 54.03 in a seventh-place finish at The American Championship.
The Knights' 800m school-record holder, senior Erica Winston, set her personal best at 2:06.86 at The American Championship.
Sophomore Anne-Marie Blaney holds the program's best mark in the 5000m and 10,000m, qualifying in each events. The Ocala native finished first in 10,000m and second in the 5000m at The American Championship.
Peaking at the right time was senior Sandy Jean, who ran her best time, 57.87, of the spring to capture the title in the 400 hurdles at the American Championship. The Miami native competed at the NCAA Championship a season ago and was named a second team All-American in the 400 hurdles.
An NCAA veteran in senior Jen Clayton holds the fifth-best mark of 6.42/21-00.75 in the region in the long jump. The Nyack, N.Y., native took the bronze medal at the long jump at the 2013 NCAA Championship, earning All-American First Team accolades.
Senior Destinee Romain and sophomore Kalen Hambrick earned slots in the hammer throw. Romain posted her best mark of 55.45/181-11 at Hodges Stadium on April 26. The best toss for Hambrick came at home with a distance of 56.36m/184-11.
The Knights' 4x400m relay team posted their top time this season at the Georgia Tech Invitational with a time of 44.42 by sophomore Christal Peterson, Bellamy, Clayton and Vaughn. Junior Kirsten Nieuwendam is slotted to serve as an alternate in the team event.
A tremendous finishing leg by Charles aided UCF to the 4x400 relay gold medal at The American Championship to break the school record at 3:32.59. Jean, Clayton and Jocelyn provided Charles with that opportunity. The alternate for the Knights is junior Devinn Cartwright.
Two rounds are slated for the NCAA East Preliminaries with the top 12 in each individual and relay event advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene Ore., on June 11-14.
