EUGENE, Ore. (UCFAthletics.com) - Junior sprinter Aurieyall Scott and head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert of the UCF track and field team received high praise Monday from the USTFCCCA as the South Region Track Athlete and Coach of the Year, respectively.
The pair were bestowed the same honors during the indoor season, marking the first time in program history UCF has swept both awards in the same year.
Scott reigned as Conference USA's 200-meter champion for the third-straight year. She also won gold with the 4x100 relay and silver in the 100 meters at the meet en route to her third-straight High Point Scorer of the Meet distinction.
She advanced to the NCAA Championships as the East Region's top qualifier at both the 100M in 11.05 (+3.8) and 200M in 22.53 (+1.3), as well as the 4x100 relay.
As the first Knight in program history to win the award during the outdoor season, she is currently on the Bowerman Watch List, meriting consideration for the nation's top award of collegiate track and field.
Smith Gilbert won her third-consecutive regional coach of the year honor and fifth overall (indoor and outdoor seasons). The six-time C-USA Coach of the Year guided the program to its first outdoor national top-10 ranking in the USTFCCCA poll. She is the only coach to have three 100-meter runners who rank among the top-10 seeded qualifiers of this week's NCAA Championships.
Twelve school records were broken this outdoor season while the team won its fourth-straight C-USA title - a feat unmatched by any other women's track and field program in conference history.
The Knights will compete at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
The NCAA Championships will broadcast live on the ESPN network:
June 6 at 6:50 p.m. ET: ESPN3
