ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - A day after reporting to campus, the UCF volleyball team kicked off its first day of 2009 preseason camp Monday with a pair of practices and its annual photo day.

"It seems like we have been counting down to this day since we finished practice in the spring," second year head coach Todd Dagenais said. "It is so exciting that the day is finally here where we get into the gym and we get to work out as a team."

The day began with an early breakfast at 7:30 a.m., before officially kicking off with 9 a.m. practice. After treatments, a bite to eat for lunch and a quick change, the team took part in photo day. Each player had a head shot and a full-body posed shot taken, before heading out to take a few team shots around campus.

Once the fun of photo day came to a close, the Knights had to switch gears and get back to business for their afternoon practice at 3:30 p.m.

With the 2009 roster boasting eight newcomers, Dagenais and his staff are focusing the early stages of camp on the fundamentals of the game, before progressing into more advanced drills as the days wear on.

"Right now, our biggest focus is going to be on teaching and training," Dagenais said. "We are probably going to spend about three or four days working on very minute-detailed types of things. Then, probably by about the fifth day of camp, we will start focusing more on the game of volleyball and multiple-skill drills."

The skipper was impressed by the enthusiasm the newcomers showed on the floor on opening day and how their energy rubbed off on the Knights' returners.

"The energy that the younger players are bringing has already elevated the intensity of practice," Dagenais said. "The new players add an element of hunger, excitement and desire that the returning players are really feeding off of. Having all of this enthusiasm right now and certainly a high level of optimism is a lot of fun and is very contagious."

The excitement surrounding the 2009 volleyball season will only intensify, as the squad opens the season in a mere 18 days on its home court for the Radisson-UCF Invitational on Aug. 28.
