ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With over one hundred curious fans in the stands, the UCF volleyball team showed a preview of what it has in store for the 2009 season when it played its second-annual Black and Gold Scrimmage at The Venue at UCF Saturday afternoon.

The scrimmage served as the finale to the Knights' preseason training camp and the beginning of its quest to build a solid foundation for the season.

Second-year head coach Todd Dagenais was impressed with what he saw from his young squad on the court.

"I thought, in spurts, that we looked really, really good," Dagenais said. "We are so far ahead of where we were last year that now I start to get picky and selfish and I start to want more and more. We are definitely further ahead of where we were last year, especially in defense and blocking."

During the four-set scrimmage, the Knights tallied 23 total blocks, which included 30 block assists and eight block solos, while also posting 85 digs.

"When we are in system I think that we can be a pretty good team," Dagenais said. "I think that we have all of the options and we have all of the weapons, we just have to be in system to be able to do it. But, I was very impressed with our defense and was very impressed with our blocking and that really has a lot to do with the job the assistant coaches have done in preparing the team in those different areas."

The Knights' offense registered 99 kills and 13 service aces in the event.

The Black and Gold opens the 2009 season on Aug. 28 when it hosts the Radisson-UCF Invitational at The Venue at UCF. The Knights will kick-off the tournament with matches against in-state rivals Jacksonville and North Florida, before wrapping up the event on Aug. 29 against Florida Atlantic and DePaul.

Season tickets for the upcoming season are on sale now for only $30, with the Knights hosting 16 regular-season matches at The Venue at UCF throughout the year.
