TAMPA, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF volleyball team has reached the halfway point of its inaugural American Athletic conference slate. Having played nine league matches and faced each conference foe once, the month of November will bring the second go-around through the schedule, beginning with in-state rival USF on Friday night at The Corral.
The Knights (15-7, 6-3 The American) currently sit in a three-way tie for third in the standings, just one game behind USF. The Bulls (13-10, 7-2) have used a five-game winning streak to vault into second place in the league. One of USF’s two conference losses, however, came on the road at UCF on Sept. 27 in front of a record crowd of 1,669 fans at Volleybowl VI. The Knights and Bulls are no strangers to competition in volleyball, having played 70 times over the years with USF holding a 45-25 advantage.
USF’s sophomore outside hitter Erin Fairs has been on a recent tear, winning the last three American Conference Player of the Week awards and jumping into the conference lead in kills per set. Fairs is also ranked in the top ten in digs and hitting percentage.
The Black and Gold will counter Fairs and the rest of the Bulls with their offensive triple threat of junior middle blocker DeLaina Sarden (.412 hit percentage – first in conference), Marie Reiterova (11.46 assists per set – first in conference) and senior outside hitter Angelica Crump (3.56 kills per set – third in conference).
